There is a tornado warning that includes D.C., Arlington, and Hyattsville on Thursday afternoon through 4:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
At 3:46 p.m., a severe thunderstorm “capable of producing a tornado was located over US Capitol, or over Nationals Park, moving east at 40 mph,” an NWS weather advisory states.
A tornado warning is one step up from a watch, and indicates that a tornado has already been spotted and that “there is imminent danger to life and property,” per NWS. It recommends people seek shelter—specifically, move to interior rooms of study buildings and avoid windows.
The NWS is also issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for the area through 4:15 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm watch through 8 p.m.
According to Kevin Donahue, D.C.’s deputy mayor for safety, Pepco is reporting a power outage in wards 7 and 8 that is impacting approximately 2,200 customers. Pepco estimates that the power will be restored from 6 to 7 p.m.
