Banneker and the rest of D.C.’s public pools open for the summer this weekend.

D.C.’s outdoor public pools officially reopen for the summer on Saturday, May 25. Among the first to take the plunge? Mayor Muriel Bowser, who will kick off the season with a ceremony at Langdon Pool and Spray Park in Northeast today at 4 p.m.

Former mayor Anthony Williams did an annual cannonball to kick off pool openings every summer—a tradition Adrian Fenty, to some disappointment, did not adopt. Neither did Vincent Gray. The return of cannonball even became something of a campaign issue.

Mayor Bowser has gotten in the pool in the past few years, but without the full-on cannonball. In 2017, she went with a dive instead. She also jumped in in 2016.

But back to the pools themselves: They’ll be open throughout the three-day weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (and spray parks will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) It’s looking like there is some pretty good pool weather in the forecast, with the exception of some possible showers on Sunday evening.

After Memorial Day weekend, the District’s water facilities will only operate on the weekends through the middle of June. On June 17, pool hours move to summer schedules, which differ by facility.
