The coming week brings cuisine from the Brazilian state of Bahia, the massive charity food crawl Dine-N-Dash, and European rosé. Or if you’re feeling rowdy, watch D.C. and Baltimore brewers face off in a ping-pong tournament.
30 restaurants in one night
Bring an empty stomach to Dine-N-Dash tonight, where you’ll hit 30 of D.C.’s most popular restaurants in one night of unlimited food and drinks — all in the name of charity. Transportation is provided between three neighborhoods (Penn Quarter, the Wharf, and 14th Street) where participating eateries and bars include Jaleo, Taco Bamba, Kith/Kin, Tiki TNT, Doi Moi, Colada Shop, Bresca, Officina, and Daikaya. Spring for a VIP ticket and you’ll get to visit Del Mar de Fabio Trabocchi, Denson Liquor Bar, and Flight Wine Bar. The VIP ticket also gets you a reception and afterparty with celebrity chef and humanitarian José Andrés and special guests, including Kwame Onwuachi, executive chef of Kith/Kin, and Antonia Lofaso, a cookbook author, California-based chef, and television personality. The event benefits Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has served more than 10 million meals to natural disaster survivors, and others around the globe. (Various locations, Wednesday, 6 p.m.-10 p.m., general admission $125, VIP admission $400)
Beat the Metro shutdown blues
WMATA commuters can take the edge off the latest round of Metro closures in northern Virginia at Bastille, where you’ll enjoy happy-hour pricing until 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 percent off lunch when you flash your SmarTrip card. Prix fixe menus aren’t included in the promotion, which runs now through Sept. 8. Otherwise, you’ll score $2 off all small plates and beers. (Bastille, $5 for house wine and $6 for house cocktails)
A taste of Brazil
Sip caipirinhas and chow down on feijoada carioca Friday during Festival Afro-Bahia’s Taste of Bahia, celebrating food from that Brazilian state. The festival itself runs Thursday through Sunday, but Friday is all about food. Look forward to the aforementioned feijoada carioca (a black bean stew) vatapá (shrimp stew), or indulge your sweet tooth with flan and coconut candy called cocada. Burn the calories off with a samba party beginning at 7:30 p.m. (Fundaçāo Internacional de Capoeira Angola, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., tickets $42)
Happy hour for a cause
Enjoy happy hour prices all night Friday at natural wine bar Dio during its For A Cause event. Twenty five percent of sales and 100 percent of raffle proceeds will benefit A Wider Circle, a nonprofit that fights local poverty. The items getting raffled off include jewelry, a natural wine festival, and of course, wine. (Dio, happy hour drinks are $8 each)
Baltimore vs. D.C.
Who does ping pong better, Baltimore or D.C.? Found out Saturday when The Berliner in Georgetown hosts a single-elimination Ping Pong Challenge between Baltimore’s Diamondback Brewing Company and D.C.’s Right Proper Brewing Company. Several beers from each company are on tap all day. Patrons can also sign up to challenge the brewers to a match: The tournament winner scores limited-edition prizes from both companies. (The Berliner, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., free entry)
Popping rosé bottles
Hit up Roofers Union on Wednesday during the fourth annual War of the Rosés where you’ll sip rosé from all over the world by the glass or the half-priced bottle. Countries represented are Austria, France, Italy, and Spain, and bottles from each one are available on all three levels, including the rooftop. The rosé voted most popular scores a spot on the menu at Roofers Union and its sister wine bar Jug & Table. (Roofers Union, Wednesday, 5 p.m.-close, the Spanish rosé costs $18/bottle for the event, French rosé costs $20/bottle, the Italian rosé costs $22/bottle, and the Austrian rosé costs $24/bottle)
