Eater has named Park View bagel shop Call Your Mother one of the 16 best new restaurants in America, putting a bright spotlight on an eatery that already regularly has a line around the block.
The self-described “jew-ish” eatery is the creation of Chef Dani Moreira and “Chief Dough Boy” Andrew Dana, who’s also behind the popular Upshur Street pizzeria Timber Pizza (which made Bon Appetit’s list of 50 best new restaurants in 2017).
The shop “nails the basics, then takes them a step further,” Eater said, pointing to the Amar’e sandwich—a za’atar-flavored bagel with candied salmon cream cheese, cucumber, crispy shallots, and seasonal, local greens—and it’s crispy, crunchy latkes, which the outlet claims are the best in the city.
Eater also credits Call Your Mother with ending the city’s “much-kvetched-about bagel drought.”
D.C. is no stranger to making the outlet’s annual list—it’s the fifth time in five years that the District’s restaurants have gotten a nod (Maydan, Himitsu, Pineapple & Pearls, and Maketto have also made the cut).
Call Your Mother first fired up its ovens in October 2018. It’s freshly-made bagels, homemade shmears, and “other Jew-ish stuff” menu section (which includes pastrami fried rice and tacos) have gained a loyal following—weekend wait times can easily approach the hour-long mark. (The shop also hosts reservation-only “family dinners” on Tuesday-Thursday nights, where 18 guests can share a communal meal prepared by Moreira.)
But soon, at least, there will be double the number of bagels. Moreira and Dana announced last month that they’re planning a second Call Your Mother location in Georgetown.
