Whether you’re walking your dog or looking for a place to grab some quick food, you may not always want to step inside of a restaurant, sit down, and order. That doesn’t mean your only option is fast food: There are actually plenty of walk-up windows around the District serving everything from nachos to coffee to cocktails to chicken-topped ice cream. And more are coming—Rebel Taco Cantina will be serving up late-night tacos on U Street come fall, Washingtonian reports. Until then, here’s where to find other local eats via window.
Bantam King
This colorful ramen shop has a fun summer addition you might not expect: a walk-up window for soft-serve ice cream and other frozen treats to cool off (perhaps after some piping hot ramen?) For adventurous eaters, Bantam King offers two sweet-savory combos: a cup of vanilla soft serve topped with chicken fat caramel, or a cup of soft serve with a spicy fried chicken drumstick placed on top.
Bantam King is located at 501 G St. NW. Window open Sunday-Thursday 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 1:30 a.m.-11 p.m.
Dolcezza at Logan Circle
Unlike the CityCenter and Wharf locations, the Logan Circle Dolcezza offers something unique: the ability to order some tasty gelato or coffee from the sidewalk and continue your walk along 14th Street. For such a heavily trafficked area, especially on the weekends, it can be a godsend especially if you have your dog in tow. The location offers sorbet, gelato, sundaes, and pour-over coffee. The walk-up window, which has been around since its opening in 2014, is perhaps a wiser choice anyway: a lot of Yelp users say seating can get tight in the shop.
Dolcezza is located 1418 14th St. NW. Open Monday-Thursday 7 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday 7 a.m.-11 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-11 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
El Rey
U Street’s El Rey’s walk-up window hours are limited, only from midnight to 3 a.m. on weekends, but those hours make it particularly effective. According to the restaurant, the window is busy due to heavy foot traffic as people hunt for quick, affordable food after a night of partying at nearby bars. All of the food is quick-turn, including nachos, enchiladas, and tamales. And since the entirety of El Rey is an open-air patio, the window doesn’t tend to impact the temperature inside the restaurant, the establishment says. (Note: Rebel Taco Cantina‘s window will also be offering late-night tacos about four blocks away.)
El Rey is located at 919 U St. NW. The window is open on weekends from 12 a.m.-3 a.m.
Elle
If you want to beat long lines for breakfast, skip the front door and order your coffee, tea, kombucha, pastries or breads, and other ready-made items at the walk-up window on weekends. If you want one of their can’t-miss breakfast sandwiches or an espresso drink, though, you’ll have to go inside.
Elle is located at 3221 Mount Pleasant St. NW. Window open Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Hook Hall
Hook Hall, the massive Park View beer hall/cafe/event space hybrid, has yet to open its walk-up window which will correspond with the opening of its cafe. Anna Valero, owner of Hook Hall, says the cafe is expected to open in September alongside the walk-up window, which will open starting 7:30 a.m. People can order coffee and Bread & Chocolate pastries from it as they walk along Georgia Avenue, she says.
Hook Hall is located at 3400 Georgia Ave. NW.
Roy Boys
The fried chicken and oyster joint, which drew some fire before opening due to some questionable interior decor, has a walk-up window that isn’t open all the time, but certainly late on weekend nights, according to co-owner Jon Rennich. He says people often use it when ordering off of Grubhub, Ubereats, or Postmates. But the real reason the window is there? The bright takeout sign makes the restaurant “stick out like a sore thumb,” Rennich says. “With all the foot traffic from the bars the next block up, we hoped the late night bar crowd would find nice affordable comfort food such as pizza, burgers, and fried chicken.” And so far, he says people have come to take their food to-go and seem to have enjoyed it.
Roy Boys is located at 2108 8th St. NW. Window open late on weekends.
Surfside at Dupont Circle
This Dupont Circle taco stand is easy to find at all hours of the day, particularly late at night, due to the ever-present line out front. Their walk-up window is open 24 hours (although it has briefly closed before due to extremely cold temperatures) and serves up tacos, quesadillas, and burrito bowls. There’s also a late-night menu that includes scrambled eggs if you’re looking to get a very late or very early breakfast, depending on how you look at it. Beware though: Seating is limited outdoors and you may find yourself throwing your heels off and sitting on the curb.
Surfside is located at 1800 N St. NW. Open 24 hours.
Urbano 116
If you’re in Old Town Alexandria on a nice day, take a walk after work to Urbano 116’s walk-up window that serves tacos and churros. The $8 churros come with chocolate on the side, or you could eat a real lunch with tacos priced at $3.50 each.
Urbano 116 is located at 116 King Street, Alexandria. Open weekdays 4 p.m.-10 p.m., weekends 12 p.m.-10 p.m.
Velo Cafe
The walk-up window at Velo Cafe serves two purposes, according to co-owner Jarrett Conway: One, since the cafe is attached to a bike shop District Hardware, it allows the cafe to open up earlier than the bike shop without disruption and two; it allows people to get coffee with their dogs. “We’re a dog friendly shop,” Conway says, but DC Department of Health restrictions do not allow dogs inside the cafe space. “That walk-up window is perfect for all of our doggy parents who still want to get their coffee.” Plus, he says, people looking to get their bike repaired can sit outside on the cafe’s patio after grabbing their coffee from the walk-up window to wait.
Velo Cafe is located at 730 Maine Ave SW. Window is open Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. on.
The Wharf
The bustling waterside neighborhood is home to many walk-up windows, including Hank’s Oyster Bar, which was originally meant to be a place for patrons to grab “boardwalk food” to munch on as they walk, according to the restaurant. Now, however, it’s where patrons can order drinks to enjoy on the patio, which has standing tables available. Additionally, you can use the walk-up window at Southwest Soda Pop Shop if you have a sweet tooth, Union Pie if you’re looking to grab some late-night thin-crust pizza on your way home from a show at The Anthem, and Camp Wharf, where you can pick up s’mores and cook them at the fire pit.
The Wharf is located at 760 Maine Ave. SW.
