A 16-year-old from Southeast D.C. died from gunshot wounds after a shooting in Garfield Heights.

Seventh District police officers heard several gunshots while on patrol and arrived at the 3000 block of 24th Place SE shortly after midnight on September 10, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Officers found a juvenile male victim, later identified as Steffen Brathwaite, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body, per law enforcement.

Brathwaite was transported to a local hospital by D.C. Fire and EMS and admitted in critical but stable condition, according to a D.C. police report. He was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m.

Police are investigating the murder and have not provided a description of a suspect or a possible motive.

Brathwaite’s death marks the 119th homicide in the District in 2019, up 13 percent from this time last year.
