A mere day after 70-degree temperatures, Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated the hypothermia alert for the first time this season.
National Weather Service is forecasting a low temperature tonight of 36 degrees with a wind chill factor below freezing. Hypothermia alerts occur when the NWS forecasts a temperature at or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or when there’s a forecast of 40 degrees or lower with a chance of precipitation at or above 50 percent.
The city is required to shelter all people experiencing homelessness when an alert is activated. At these times, the District opens shelters in public spaces, often recreation centers, so folks can find warmth.
On November 1, these recreation centers will be open:
- Co-ed Shelter: Malcolm X Opportunity Center, 1351 Alabama Avenue SE, starting at 8 p.m.
- Women-only Shelter: Sherwood Recreation Center, 640 10th Street NE, starting at 9 p.m.
If you see a person who needs shelter, call the shelter hotline: 202-399-7093, or 311. Have a location, time, and description of the person available, and that number will request transportation to a shelter.
Families in need of shelter can call that number at any time as well.
The city is asking people who see animals left outside in extreme temperatures to alert the Humane Rescue Alliance by calling 202-576-6664.
