Tom Sietsema may have given it zero stars and a scathing review, but apparently—more than a decade after its opening—D.C. is still gaga for Founding Farmers. The “urban farmhouse,” as it’s called on the Founding Farmers website, was the single most-booked restaurant on OpenTable in 2019 (January through September, anyway, as that’s the period of its annual review).
This isn’t the first time that the restaurant has received this particular honor: Per Washingtonian, it’s been the most-reserved restaurant on OpenTable five times before, from 2013 to 2017. OpenTable didn’t release data for 2018, a spokesperson says.
Since it opened its flagship location on Pennsylvania Ave. in 2008, Farmers Restaurant Group has expanded to include locations in D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. In the District alone, there’s Founding Farmers, Farmers Fishers Bakers, Farmers & Distillers, and Founding Spirits.
The whole principle behind the group’s foods is exactly what it sounds like: sustainably sourced farm-to-table food. According to its website, 47,000 family farmers own a majority stake in the restaurant. But, one important caveat: “That doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.”
If you’ve lived in D.C. for any length of time, you know the restaurant(s). It’s in a prime location just three blocks from the White House, which Sietsema credits in his 2016 review for the constant line. “Frankly, I can think of only three reasons for the crowds: location, location, location,” he writes. “With the White House a few blocks away, the place is hard to miss.”
Personally, I credit the crowds to the prosciutto farm bread.
In addition to the controversy stemming from that bad Post review, the restaurant group also settled a lawsuit in 2018 for $1.49 million for allegedly violating D.C.’s paid sick leave law.
In the wake of the zero-star review, Founding Farmers claimed in a statement, “We value the thousands of reviews we’ve received on OpenTable and we’ll continue to work hard to deserve the 95 percent of our guests who say they would recommend the restaurant to a friend.”
