Commuters wait outside of Van Ness Metro Station, where service was suspended on Tuesday morning.

Update, 4:50 p.m.: While the issues impacting the Red Line during the morning commute have been resolved, it appears that riders will face a different set of problems this evening.

Metro has suspended service between Van Ness and Dupont Circle stations, because of a track problem occurring in between the Dupont Circle and Woodley Park stations, the transit agency says. The agency has requested shuttles to supplement service.

This comes a day after Metro had to suspend service on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on Monday afternoon. That issue was due to a train fatally striking a person at Farragut West. According to Metro, video surveillance showed that the person intentionally entered the tracks as the train approached.

Commuters on the Red Line are having a hell of a time getting where they need to go this morning.

The problem stems from reports of an insulator smoking in the tunnel between Tenleytown and Friendship Heights stations, per D.C. Fire and EMS, which is investigating the situation. No injuries have been reported, the agency says.

As a result of this incident, Metro originally suspended train service between Friendship Heights and Van Ness stations. As of around 10 a.m., the transit agency restored service to Friendship Heights and Van Ness, but trains are still bypassing Tenleytown. There is currently shuttle service available.

The back-up has created a snarl of delays impacting riders going in both directions on the Red Line.
