FRIDAY, JANUARY 10
GIRLS JUST WANNA: Girls just wanna raise money for safe housing through comedy, right? An all-female line-up of comedians is taking over the Colony Club to make you laugh and raise money for the District Alliance for Safe Housing, which provides safe housing for survivors of violence and their families. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door. (Colony Club, 8 p.m., $10-$15)
ARIA: Operas might seem like old-fashioned art pieces that make the female protagonist cry in every romantic comedy, but did you know people are still writing them? The Kennedy Center celebrates these contemporary operatic artists each year in its American Opera Initiative Festival. On Friday, hear three short operas presented for the very first time with a small chamber orchestra. (Kennedy Center, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., $19-$40)
GET INKED: Perhaps you’ve been waiting to get that tattoo until someone can answer your questions, like “OK but really, how much does it hurt,” and “It stays on for HOW long??” A bunch of experts will be in the same place this weekend for the DC Tattoo Expo. Friday includes artists meet-and-greets, competitions for the best sleeve or portrait, and an open floor of tattooers and pierce-rs open for business. (Crystal Gateway Marriott, Arlington, Friday-Sunday, $30)
