Dig into a lineup this week that includes paired rum dinners at Dacha Navy Yard, birthday nachos, and a private chef’s riffs on chicken and waffles, among other dishes.
Happy Birthday to El Rey
El Rey is celebrating six years of margaritas, nachos, and dancing inside shipping containers with … margaritas, nachos, and dancing. Wednesday’s birthday party for the restaurant and bar will include special prices on margs, quesadillas, and nachos, plus birthday cake and specials on Cuervo tequila. DJ Kidd Marvel will provide the tunes. (919 U St. NW, Wednesday, 5 p.m.-12 a.m., a la carte)
Fun With Food and Rum
Dacha Navy Yard‘s launching its first-ever chef’s table where chef Scott Robinon teams up with a D.C. distillery or libation producer each month to collaborate on a six-course dinner. For Wednesday’s inaugural dinner, Robison will produce a pairing inspired by Cotton & Reed Distillery rums. Think scallops (served with corn grits, mushrooms, and bacon) paired with a winterized daiquiri made with lime, simple syrup, Porter beer, and Cotton & Reed’s white rum. (79 Potomac Ave. SE, Wednesday, 7 p.m., $95, not including taxes and gratuities)
Shuck It Up
If you don’t know how to shuck an oyster, head over to the The Salt Line on Thursday where oyster farmer Alex Johnson will show how it’s done. Johnson, of Harris Creek Oyster Company, will also educate you on sustainable practices within the seafood industry and the importance of oysters in our region. Besides that, you’ll get to eat what you shuck while enjoying New England-inspired small bites and drinks. (79 Potomac Ave. SE, Thursday 5:30 p.m. $65)
For the Brunch Brigade…
Natasha Allicock, a private chef hailing from Guyana whose cuisine is influenced by her father’s Chinese roots and her mother’s Indian heritage, is rolling out a pop-up brunch Saturday at Valor Brewpub within The Ugly Mug, as the Washington City Paper first reported. Allicock’s “Carib Vybz” brunch menu includes Caribbean rum-soaked challah French toast, a bowl of roasted vegetables, greens and grains served with a Japanese omelette, and finally her spin on chicken and waffles—fried jerk chicken and plantain waffles. Local ice cream outfit Ruby Scoops, owned by Rabia Kamara, provides vegan frozen desserts. (723 8th St SE, Saturday noon-3 p.m., $40 a person for general admission)
Teatime for Teddies
The Watergate Hotel’s typical high tea service is a fancy affair, and the participants are all human. That isn’t the case at their Teddy Bear Tea Party, where kids can bring their stuffed friends for a special afternoon. Participants will receive a tray of finger sandwiches and desserts, plus tea to share. Adults can score a glass of prosecco, too. (2650 Virginia Ave. NW, Sunday, 2 p.m.-3 p.m., $55 for adults, $25 for kids, reservations available by calling 833-304-4830)
Feast for the Chinese New Year
Happy year of the rat: Tiger Fork is celebrating the Chinese New Year with a week of performances, parties, and special dishes. Starting Monday, the Blagden Alley restaurant’s menu will include Cantonese dishes that symbolize good luck. There’s lobster with duck confit and noodles, steamed bass with ginger and scallion, and a custard dessert made with almond and pomelo flavors. You can also snack on mushroom eggrolls and plenty of dumplings. The menu is available all week, capping off with an all-day party on Jan. 26. (922 N St. NW, Monday-Jan. 26, a la carte)
This post has been updated with the correct spelling for Scott Robison’s name and the correct date for the Teddy Bear Tea Party.
