Brave the chilly weather with a lineup of events that includes ramen and pancake pop-ups, a polar plunge in a pool for charity, and curry bowls to keep you warm and toasty.
Take the polar plunge
Yards Park transforms into an après-ski venue on Saturday with Ice Yards 2020, where you’ll sip icy cocktails and local brews across several stations. Enjoy food and drinks from Due South, Agua 301, or Ice Cream Jubilee and coffee from Thompson Hotel. There’s a complete lineup of activities, like axe throwing, a jousting pit, listening to live music, and taking part in what’s being billed as D.C.’s largest shotski attempt. Or raise money for the Special Olympics D.C. by taking the Polar Plunge in an onsite swimming pool. You’ll be raising money to support more than 1,800 athletes here who get year-round sports training and chances to compete in the Special Olympics D.C. Games. (355 Water St SE, Saturday 1 p.m.-4 p.m., $10, 21 and over only)
Dio Wine Bar + coffee
Starting Friday, you’ll find more than natural wine at Dio Wine Bar, which is unleashing a permanent pop-up with Candy Schibli, owner of local coffee roaster Southeastern Roastery. The roastery takes the bar over during the day on certain days; its special menu includes Mexican Chiapas coffee and an espresso blend. Tea and fried doughnuts round out the menu. (904 H St NE, Fridays, Saturdays and the third Wednesday of the month, 7 a.m.-1 p.m., a la carte)
Bindaas bowls
Vikram Sunderam, the James Beard Award-winning executive chef at Bindaas, has created a set of curry bowls inspired by various regions in India. Available throughout February, the dishes are meant to raise your body heat while the temperatures plummet outside. Examples include a chennai lamb curry bowl available on Tuesdays, and the Bengali shrimp curry bowl, served on Wednesdays. (3309 Connecticut Ave NW and 2000 Pennsylvania Ave NW, throughout February, $14)
From the farm to your fork
Blend 111 and Caboose Tavern are teaming up for their Farm to Fork tasting dinner at each business’ Vienna locations: It features a total of 12 small plates paired with Caboose craft beers and Blend 111 wines. You decide where you want to eat first and transportation will be provided to take you to the other spot. Highlights include beet arepa paired with Citrus Session IPA and Garnatxa de Cervoles, Venezuelan cheesecake paired with the Collaborate and Listen #1 beer and Marcel Haas Riesling, and venison tartare pared with Vienna Lager and Red Cape Tempranillo. Stick around for a brewery tour of Caboose. (520 Mill St NE and 111 Church St NW, Saturday, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., $150 including transportation, tax and gratuity)
Ramen on (Pho) wheels
Starting today, Hiro Mitsui, chef of Union Market’s Ramen by Uzu, takes his ramen on the road, thanks to a collaboration with the Vietnamese food truck Pho Wheels. Wednesday you’ll find him slinging his signature vegan miso ramen and creamy miso ramen in Chinatown and Rockville. On Thursday the truck stops in Rosslyn and Crystal City; on Friday it’ll be in Silver Spring. Pho Wheels will also be serving its banh mi, tacos, and egg rolls during those times. (various locations, Wednesday-Friday, a la carte)
Pancake pop-up
Starting today, Thomas Malz, new chef at The Partisan, has rolled out a pancake pop-up menu that’ll be around the next two weekends through Feb. 9. Play it safe with plain pancakes or try gingerbread and floye (buckwheat) pancakes, served with your choice of six syrups—Malz hails from New Hampshire and is obsessed with maple syrup. Add an extra kick with ingredients like chocolate chips, blueberries, cranberries, toasted coconuts, and more. Pancakes not your jam? Try cider doughnuts, banana bread brûlée, or Johnny cakes. (709 D Street NW, Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 9, $6.50 for a half stack, $12 for a full stack)
Another happy hour?
As if you didn’t already have a ton of options for happy hour, Oak Steakhouse Alexandria launches its own such menu Monday. Head over to the bar for pimento cheese deviled eggs, beef fat fries, and an Oak BLT, among other items. Wash it all down with seasonal beer and wine and a couple of cocktails, like the vodka-based Sage Advice and the rum-soaked Tropic of Cancer. (901 N Asaph, Sundays-Thursdays, 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., a la carte)
