A WINTER’S BALL: D.C. non profit So Others Might Eat is hosting its young professional’s winter ball. All proceeds will go towards SOME’s affordable housing programs for the homeless and low-income families. The event, which is black-tie optional, will be at the National Museum of Women in the Arts with an after-party at The Admiral. There will be cocktails and dancing. EMO VS. POP PUNK: Apply your thickest black eyeliner and be prepared to cry it off in your teenage angst (or maybe nostalgia?) Either way, Black Cat is ready to break your heart on Friday night with all your teen favorites: My Chemical Romance, Paramore, The Front Bottoms, Blink 182, and more. All ages are invited. (Black Cat DC, 9 p.m., $10)

MOVIE NIGHT: Watch the incredible true story of a Syrian doctor as she risked her life to provide health care to a city under attack. The Muslim American Leadership Alliance will be putting on a showing of The Cave, a documentary (and a nominee in this year’s best documentary category at the Oscars) on Dr. Amani Ballour, in partnership with the National Geographic Picture Motion and Osmosis. Q&A and a panel will follow the screening. (National Geographic Museum, 6 p.m., FREE)

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8

SEX AND THE CITY: The only thing that can make you feel better about an awkward intimate experience is finding out someone’s has had a more awkward experience than you. Awkward Sex…and the City, a band of comedians who are dying to tell you about their sex lives, are headed to the Black Cat for their naughty Valentine’s show. Hopefully their stories of embarrassing sexual experiences will make you forget your own. (Black Cat DC, 8 p.m., $15)

EIGHTIES DRAG SHOW: If you forgot to make reservations for drag brunch this weekend, take a trip back to the 80s for a nighttime drag party. Shaw’s Tavern is hosting drag queen Kristina Kelly and her crew for a no-cover, no-reservations drag brunch party. Don’t forget your acid-wash jeans and shoulder pads! Best costume wins a prize. (Shaw’s Tavern, 11 p.m., free entry)

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? D.C.’s newest sports team debuts this weekend. Meet the DC Defenders, who’ll be facing off against the Seattle Dragons in the first game of the new XFL league. Team officials are promising shorter, more exciting games than the NFL, plus mysterious in-stadium experiences for fans at Audi Field. At  pre-game fan fest on Saturday, early fans can snag a foam battle shield to use to cheer on the team. (Audi Field, 2 p.m., $15+)

ART RAVE: Starting Sunday, you can expect a weekly pop-up art shop in the former street car tunnel that is now Dupont Underground. Over 50 artists will be there selling their wares, from sculptures to paintings to woodwork. The best part? Entry is totally free. (Dupont Underground, noon, free entry)

WILLY WONKA: Join an executive pastry chef and learn how to make chocolate truffles ahead of Valentine’s Day. Not only will you learn how to make chocolate ganache and enrobe your treats in chocolate, you will get to bring your handcrafted chocolate ganache home to your special someone. Tickets, which are cheaper bought as a couple, include a glass of prosecco. (InterContinental The Willard, 2 p.m., $65-$100)

HAPPILY NEVER AFTER: Do you dream of a fairytale wedding? Do you know what a fairytale wedding really looks like? As part of the Profs & Pints series, former Ohio State University instructors Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman will be telling the folklore versions of fairytale weddings which aren’t as romantic or magical as you’ve always imagined. Think iron shoes, curses, dark magic and more. (Bier Baron, 6 p.m., $12-$15)

OSCAR WATCH PARTY: Head to the Midlands for an Oscar watch party, but don’t forget to dress in your red carpet best. The watch party will feature pre-show trivia on past Oscar winners (remember Leonardo DiCaprio DOES have an Oscar now) and an Oscar prediction contest. Choose wisely. (The Midlands, 6:30 p.m., free entry)
