Your official non-Valentine’s Day guide for what’s coming up this week includes a truffle festival from José Andrés, rooftop yoga at 12 Stories, and what’s set to be a thought-provoking conversation at Immigrant Food about African Americans and the immigrant experience.
Do the truffle shuffle
There are only a few days left of the fourth annual Truffle Festival at José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup restaurants, which wraps up Sunday. Discover specials highlighting black winter truffles from Teruel in Spain, freshly flown in the day truffle-hunting dogs found them. Look for half-roasted Amish chicken and vegetables with shaved truffles and truffle gravy at America Eats Tavern, truffle winter vegetables at Zaytinya, or tortitas de papa con trufas (potato fritters with black truffles, parmesan cheese, house cream, and epazote, an aromatic herb) at Oyamel. Be sure to try the sommelier-selected wine pairings as well. (Through Sunday at Jaleo, China Chilcano, America Eats Tavern, Oyamel, and Zaytinya.)
Almost time for flowers
Toki Underground is hosting a workshop with Lily Cox of Rewild plant and flower studio where you’ll learn ikebana, the ancient art of Japanese floral design. In addition to walking away from the three-hour class with a floral arrangement, you’ll also get an ikebana vase, tea, sake, onigiri rice balls, and more from the ramen hotspot. (1234 H Street NE, Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., $79)
African Americans and immigration
As part of Black History Month, Immigrant Food will host a discussion Feb. 19 with a focus on African Americans’ views on immigrant experiences. It will be led by Niambi Carter, an assistant professor at Howard University and the author of “American While Black: African Americans, Immigration, and the Limits of Citizenship.” The restaurant will have food and drinks available to buy from its new happy hour menu, including chef Enrique Limardo’s vegetarian global nachos and Taj Mahal chicken sliders. The conversation also marks the first event in the restaurant’s new monthly Wine Wednesday series that invites the public for an immigration-related discussion. (1701 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Feb. 19, 6 p.m., free)
Find your zen at 12 Stories
BarSol Pisco and 12 Stories join forces Sunday for a holistic morning of wellness at 12 Stories, a cocktail lounge known for its sweeping views of the city. The morning starts with a pop-up yoga class on the rooftop led by Abby Paterson. A post-sweat social hour after the workout includes a body scrub and candle-making course helmed by Kita Love, small bites, and cocktails mixed with BarSol Pisco. There’s also have the chance to win a beauty raffle valued at $150. Class space is first come, first served, with the first 25 people to RSVP scoring free yoga mats. (75 District Square SW, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., $20)
Living my life like it’s golden
Head over to A Rake’s Bar at The Line hotel Sunday for the debut of its new Golden Hour menu, which meshes affordable drink specials with an ever-evolving lineup of food. Expect $4 Tall Boy beers, $5 Rake’s Improved Old Fashioneds, $7 sommelier picks (sparkling, red, and white wines) and $7 draft cocktails. As far as the rotating food items from chef Opie Crooks go ($6 each), look out for the roseda burger, fried chicken, porchetta sandwich, ham board, half-dozen oysters, and more. (1770 Euclid Street NW, Golden Hour is available Sundays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Wednesdays through Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.)
