A Maryland delegate drew attention to a coronavirus conspiracy theory on Twitter, prompting some calls for his resignation.
Dan Cox is a Republican delegate serving Frederick and Carroll counties, and a vocal critic of fellow Republican Governor Larry Hogan. He shared a tweet over the weekend from an Australian reporter covering an anti-shutdown protest in Melbourne. Cox added “#ArrestBillGates gains worldwide momentum” to the original tweet, which contained a video of protesters chanting “arrest Bill Gates!” The post was first flagged by WTOP.
For those unfamiliar with this particular coronavirus conspiracy (of which there are many), some antivaccination activists and right-wing pundits theorize, without proof, that billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates created the novel coronavirus in an attempt to profit from vaccines or deploy mass surveillance over a global population.
His tweet sparked replies calling for Cox to resign, others questioning Cox’s intelligence, and one very pointed remark asking if Cox had delegated his brain to the garbage disposal.
Cox’s apparent support for either a Bill Gates arrest, or an anti-shutdown protest, or both, is in keeping with the politician’s recent actions. Cox was one of the three Republican delegates to file a lawsuit against Hogan for his stay-at-home order. According to a Facebook post from Cox, he says he was threatened with arrest if he spoke at a ReOpen rally in Maryland earlier this month. He has called the pandemic shutdowns a “house arrest of 6 million people,”, and retweeted a tweet likening Hogan’s restrictions to a Nazi sentiment.
Cox has not returned requests for comment, but called outcry about his recent tweet “#hypocrisy” on Twitter.
