Editor’s note: DCist suspended our daily events guides in mid-March. But we’re bringing back weekday and weekend posts with ways to have virtual fun. We’ll be focused specifically on digital offerings from D.C.-area artists, musicians, fitness instructors, and others. (Want us to know about a virtual event? Submit them here.) And don’t forget about our guide to free movies, audiobooks, art, and other offerings from area institutions.

FRIDAY, MAY 15

GO UNDERCOVER: Who needs an invisibility cloak when you have a disguise? Find out how spies change their appearance in a flash from the master of disguise herself. Jonna Mendez is the CIA’s former Chief of Disguise and will discuss her techniques and past missions with the Spy Museum’s educators. The online event is appropriate for kids grade 5 and up. (12 p.m., FREE)

LIVING ROOM TUNES: Northern Virginia native Lauren Calve will transport you to different times with Living Room Sessions, Sixth and I and DCist’s weekly series. Calve combines blues and Americana. She’ll be previewing her upcoming EP, out on June 23, which includes a song originally inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address pre-Civil War. She’ll also show a special tribute video to honor frontline workers in the D.C. area who are fighting coronavirus. (4 p.m., FREE)

GROW TOGETHER: Learn how to graft your own plants from Greg Johnson, ANXO Cider’s head cider maker, and co-founders of Sangfroid Distilling Jeff and Nate. They’ll be on Instagram Live talking about the history of grafting, how to graft your own apple tree, and how to take care of it. The IG Live is free, but your own grafting kit can be delivered to your door for $25 from ANXO’s website. (5:30 p.m., FREE, or $25)

WEIRD FICTION: H.P. Lovecraft is known for thrilling generations of science fiction and horror fans. He’s even inspired board games, movies, and role-playing games. However, in this Profs and Pints online chat, Peter Herman, lecturer of theology and religious studies at Marymount University, will be examining Lovecraft’s issues with race and the role it played in his writings. The talk will also examine modern-day writers who are using Lovecraft’s own world to examine racism in more progressive ways. (7 p.m., $12)
