The Republican National Convention has received a permit from the National Park Service to host a fireworks show on the National Mall on Thursday. The event will mark the end of the convention, and also happens to fall the night before tens of thousands of people are expected to converge in D.C. for the March on Washington 2020.

The RNC will be responsible for the event’s production and all associated costs. Additionally, the Park Service  will “recover from the RNC all costs incurred as a result of the activity, including NPS administrative costs for permit preparation and management of the event, and monitoring of the activity to ensure compliance with the conditions of the permit,” according to an email from Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst.

The permit says the total number of participants is limited to “50 staff.” The event will take place on federal property, though D.C. currently prohibits mass gatherings of more than 50 people under its reopening guidelines.

Last week’s Democratic National Convention also featured a fireworks show near former Vice President Joe Biden’s home in Delaware.

Biden accepted the party’s nomination Thursday night inside a largely empty arena near his home in Delaware. Afterwards, he and a small group of politicians and family members watched a fireworks show outside as supporters in their cars honked their horns, flashed their lights and waved flags out of their windows.

The news of the National Mall fireworks show follows months of confusion around the GOP’s convention plans. The convention was originally scheduled to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina, until Gov. Roy Cooper requested it be scaled back due to concerns over the pandemic. Trump denounced the request, scrapped the North Carolina plans and moved many of the higher-profile events to Jacksonville, Florida.

Then, in late July, the party cancelled most of the Jacksonville events following a spike in coronavirus cases. Much of the convention will now be online, like the Democratic National Convention was last week.

Some major RNC events will take place here in the District: Trump will accept the nomination from the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday, and the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Federal Triangle will serve as a “central hub” for speeches.
