Prince George’s County Police have identified the deceased bicyclist as 56-year-old Candido Lopez-Sales of Washington, D.C.
Prince George’s County Police say a D.C. MPD officer in an unmarked police SUV was traveling westbound on East Capitol Street approaching Southern Avenue with emergency lights and sirens activated.
“According to a witness, the bicyclist was initially riding his bike on the sidewalk along East Capitol Street and then entered the roadway into the lanes of travel,” Prince George’s County Police said in a news release. “The collision took place seconds later.”

A man riding a bike is dead after he was hit by an on-duty officer in an unmarked D.C. police vehicle.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near the D.C./Maryland border at East Capitol Street and Southern Avenue, on the mid-block of East Capitol Street.
Prince George’s County Police are investigating the crash.
They say the cyclist was crossing the westbound lanes of East Capitol Street when he was hit by the unmarked MPD SUV.
Photos from the scene show the hood of the Dodge Durango was crushed and the back wheel of the road bike was bent.
The man, who has not been identified by police yet, was taken to the hospital where he died.
The street was reopened just after 11:30 p.m.
