This young alpaca was among the Washingtonians enjoying the snow storm.

The region has been hit with a three-day snow storm, totaling 6 inches in some areas, and marking the heaviest snowfall in the area since 2018.

After a year of pandemic-related closures and an intense couple of months in D.C., the snow has brought out the child in many a Washingtonian. Here are some of the wackiest ways we’ve seen folks get into the snowy spirit.

Snow-loving alpacas

Over the weekend, a few residents posted on social media about alpacas hanging out in Columbia Heights. Andrea Diaz, owner of My Pet Alpaca, tells DCist/WAMU that the alpacas were there for a birthday party. The party ordered an hour with Chewpacca (the brown alpaca), Pisco (white), and a yet-to-be named baby alpaca from the Virginia-based company, which rents out time with the fluffy friends. Diazvsays the animals are originally from the mountains so they love the snow — and, apparently, all the attention.

Snow-Bernie

It was only a matter of time before someone sculpted a snowman inspired by the Inauguration Bernie meme. Glasses: check. Surgical mask: check. Snow mittens: check. Attitude: duh.

The National Guard Snow Troops

With thousands of troops stationed around D.C. following the Jan. 6 insurrection, it’s understandable that things can get a little boring during long shifts on the barbed Capitol fence. The troops must need reinforcements, as a few have been spotted on patrol alongside sergeant-like snowmen at the security perimeter. It’s unclear whether the guardsmen assembled all of these new troops themselves.

Skiing

Who says you need to hit the mountains to shred some powder? While the Capitol Police denied Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s request to open the Capitol grounds for sledding, one person didn’t let that stop them from skiing on the National Mall.

Zoo animals

The National Zoo’s Giant Pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian slid down hills and flopped around in the snow, having more fun than any other Washingtonians did during the storm.

The zoo’s red pandas also had fun foraging for berries through the snow.

They’re not zoo animals, but these D.C. dogs brought more cuteness to our snowy timelines:

Of course, it wouldn’t be a snow day without an epic snowball fight on the Mall.
