A 47-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by the driver of a shuttle bus for Children’s National Hospital on Monday morning, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
MPD identified the cyclist as Armando Martinez-Ramos, a resident of Northwest D.C.
Martinez-Ramos was cycling down 10th Street NE across a crosswalk on the south side of Michigan Avenue around 11:07 a.m. At the same time, a bus operator for Children’s National turned into the cyclist, according to the police account.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and transported Martinez-Ramos to a nearby hospital, where the cyclist was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed.
The bus driver remained on the scene, according to MPD.
Children’s Hospital said the shuttle had no passengers at the time of the incident besides the driver, according to WUSA. The shuttle is operated by LAZ Parking.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Police are currently investigating, and we are fully cooperating with the local authorities as well as conducting our own internal reviews. The safety, security, and well-being of our employees, customers, and the communities we serve continue to be our utmost priority,” wrote LAZ Parking Spokesperson Mary Brennan Coursey in an emailed statement to DCist/WAMU.
This is the fifth traffic fatality so far this year — a slight decrease from this time last year, according to data from MPD. Three pedestrians also lost their lives after crashes in Congress Heights, Foggy Bottom, and Deanwood.
