Some of the biggest attractions in the District have announced reopening plans. The Smithsonian says many of its museums and zoo will reopen in May.
The schedule looks like this:
May 5: National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center
May 14: National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery
May 21: National Museum of American History, National Museum of the American Indian, National Zoo
All outdoor Smithsonian Gardens are already opened and don’t require a timed pass.
The museums initially closed in December, following Mayor Muriel Bowser’s temporary order issued in the wake of rising coronavirus cases. A handful of local museums have since announced reopening plans, as vaccination rollouts continue across the region.
These museums were chosen to open first because these locations opened last year and have already been through the process of opening with new logistical and safety measures in place. The openings are staggered over three weeks for logistical reasons, a Smithsonian spokesperson said.
Free, timed passes will be required to visit the Smithsonian museums and zoo and can be reserved online or by calling 1-800-514-3849, extension 1. Passes can be reserved up to 30 days in advance and can book up to six passes. Groups larger than six are prohibited, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
As for folks who want to catch up with the zoo’s growing panda cub, Xiao Qi Ji, viewing will be limited for social distancing purposes and will require a separate free, timed-entry pass. Passes to see the Asia Trail and the pandas will be released throughout the day, and visitors can pick them up when they arrive at the zoo. But keep in mind, the zoo notes: Xiao Qi Ji spends most of his time sleeping.
Most of the museums will only be open Wednesday through Sunday and will open at various times. The National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia and the zoo will be open every day.
Masks will be required at all times, except when eating or drinking in designated areas. Social distancing, hand washing and other regular coronavirus protocols should be followed.
A spokesperson for the Smithsonian says there’s no specific timetable for the opening of the other museums, but more will reopen throughout the summer with all of them open by the end of the year.
This post has been updated with additional information about the museums’ reopenings.
