Glenn Close didn’t take home the Oscar for best supporting actress last night, but the 74-year-old Hollywood legend ended up stealing the show — and upending 2021 bingo cards across the region — when she danced to D.C. go-go band E.U.’s (Experience Unlimited) “Da Butt.”

During a trivia game, actor Lil Rel Howery had Questlove play a song and asked the night’s nominees to guess whether the tune was from an Oscar winner, a nominee, or none of the above.

When Howery came around to quiz Close on “Da Butt,”  he jokingly assumed that Close would know nothing of the hit go-go song featured in Spike Lee’s School Days. Not only did Close recognize the song, but she went on to shout out E.U.’s founder Sugar Bear, the Backyard Band, and the “whole DMV” before getting up and dancing herself.

As it turns out, the entire bit was scripted, according to the L.A. Times, but that didn’t seem to matter much to the Twitter users losing their minds over Close’s Academy Award-winning twerking.

Take Me Out To The Go-Go Magazine, the region’s longest running go-go music blog, says that despite the scripting of it all (it was an awards show, after all) Close still gave a boost to go-go on a national stage.

“Now, was Glenn priorly coached and scripted the information by maybe someone such as QuestLove? Maybe so. That’s likely to have happened,” reads the magazine’s blog post on Close’s performance. “However, that’s all besides the point and it really doesn’t matter. The fact of the matter is: She gave it strong recognition on the national stage in front of a national audience. And if indeed she wasn’t aware of all this detailed information beforehand, she and that national audience definitely know it now.”

Close, nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Hillbilly Elegy, took home her eighth Oscar loss on Sunday night, but ended the night as a winner in most eyes.
