Starting on Saturday, Four Green/Yellow Line stations in Maryland — West Hyattsville, Prince George’s Plaza, College Park and Greenbelt — are closing for the summer.
That means no Green Line service north of Fort Totten, while the Yellow Line will end at Mount Vernon Square.
Free shuttle buses will run at all stations during Metro’s regular hours, 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sundays. Buses will come every 6-10 minutes for limited-stop service, and every 15 minutes for the local service.
Parking will also be free at the stations during the closures.
The stations will reopen on Sept. 6 after extensive rehabilitation to the outdoor stations, which are nearly 30 years old.
The projects will rebuild the concrete and stone lips of the platform, replace old tile, and add amenities like power outlets, new passenger information screens, and improved security cameras.
Closing the stations completely allow crews to work more efficiently rather than having a much longer stretch of single-tracking while the station remains open.
Metro has rehabbed more than a dozen of its aging outdoor stations and has about seven more to go. The first shutdown in 2019 was somewhat disruptive, but Metro had historically low ridership because of the pandemic this year. Metro predicts ridership will remain low in 2021.
This fall, the Red Line station at Rockville will close for several months so crews can demolish and rebuild the aging canopy structure over the platform. Trains will end at Twinbrook at times. Next summer, the east end of the Orange Line will get platform reconstructions at Cheverly, Landover, and New Carrollton. Minnesota Avenue and Deanwood will also be closed due to the work.
Meanwhile, the FEMA vaccination site at the Greenbelt station will close Tuesday but will be accessible by shuttle bus until then.
