Two Washington Mystics players have been chosen to represent Team USA in this summer’s Tokyo Olympics. Guard Ariel Atkins and center Tina Charles are two of the 12-woman roster announced today.

They’ll join other WNBA stars Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Jewell Loyd, Chelsea Gray, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Sylvia Fowles, A’Ja Wilson, and Brittney Griner in their bid to win a 7th straight gold for Team USA.

Mystic Tina Charles is a seven-time All-Star, and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2012. She is currently the highest scorer on the Mystics, averaging 24 points per game. Just behind Charles, Ariel Atkins clocks in as the team’s second-highest scorer, averaging a career-high 19 points per game this season.

Atkins was particularly vocal last summer during the WNBA boycott following the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

“We wanted to make everyone feel like they were supported and understanding that this isn’t just about basketball,” Atkins told ESPN at the time. “We aren’t just basketball players. And just because we are basketball players doesn’t mean that’s our only platform. We need to understand that when most of us go home we still are Black.”

One Mystics star not included on the list is Elena Delle Donne. The 31 year old was named 2019’s MVP, and was part of the 2019 Mystic’s first ever WNBA championship title win that same year. Delle Donne represented her country in the 2016 games, but has not suited up in a WNBA game since the 2019 championship win due to back injuries.

The women’s basketball portion of the Tokyo Games is scheduled to start July 26, and the tournament will last until August 8. The WNBA will take a break during that time to allow the stars to compete, with the Mystics returning to the court in mid-August.

The men’s roster for Team USA has not yet been announced.
