A 49-year-old Metropolitan Police Officer has been charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old student in 2005 and 2006, according to court documents.

Lucius Kearney, a veteran officer currently working in the Fourth District, faces a first-degree child sex abuse felony charge, according to documents filed in the D.C. Superior Court on Wednesday. According to D.C. police, Kearney has been placed on duties that don’t require contact with the public and his “police powers have been revoked.” An attorney for Kearney, who has been with the force since 2001, did not respond to DCist/WAMU’s request for comment. Kearney himself declined to comment to the Washington Post.

Kearney, who lives in Waldorf, Maryland, allegedly met the 15-year-old when she, then in 10th grade, interviewed him for a school project. The two exchanged numbers, after which Kearney allegedly sent the student inappropriate messages. Kearney was 34 at the time.

According to the filing documents, Kearney allegedly sexually abused the student three times over the course of 2005 and 2006.

In March 2020, the woman, then 29, reported the alleged abuse to her therapist after seeing Kearney outside of her home. According to court filings, Kearney was across the street on a call. His body camera recorded the interaction with the woman, where she says “I know you.” Kearney replies “Oh. Yeah? From where?”  The body camera recording then shows Kearney in his police vehicle, searching the woman’s license plate number on the computer.

The woman’s therapist referred the allegations to the abuse allegations to the Child and Family Services Agency.

Kearney has been released, and his next court date is set for Feb. 7.
