The Washington Football Team has officially postponed its next game against the Philadelphia Eagles, originally planned for Sunday. The game is now scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m.
It’s one of three NFL games planned for this weekend that have been rescheduled as COVID-19 cases rise across the league.
“We have made these schedule changes based on medical advice and after discussion with the NFLPA as we are seeing a new, highly transmissible form of the virus this week resulting in a substantial increase in cases across the league,” the NFL said in an official statement on Friday.

On Friday, at least two dozen players were listed on the WFT’s reserve list of players affected by the virus, including starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke and second stringer Kyle Allen. Team officials had already made last-minute changes to stay on track for the Week 15 game: The team signed quarterback Garrett Gilbert in hopes of starting him on Sunday in Philadelphia.
The Washington Football Team finally got some relatively good news on Saturday: the team announced that four key players, two starters and two reserves, are out of COVID protocols and will be eligible to play in Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, defensive end Montez Sweat, along with backup defensive ends James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohil are now eligible to participate.
Meanwhile, D.C. is seeing another COVID-19 surge, having recorded the pandemic’s highest daily case count twice this week. It’s triggered school closures in DC and Prince George’s County, and restaurant closures around the District as employees test positive. Earlier this week, District officials confirmed four cases of the omicron variant for the first time.
