One of the perks of being home to the White House is a sitting president will occasionally patronize a D.C. small business.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden stopped by HoneyMade, a store located in Barracks Row that sells handcrafted or locally made goods. Viboonrattana Honey just opened the store in June, so she was pleasantly surprised to have the president pay a visit.

Honey tells DCist/WAMU Biden purchased a hoodie adorned with a bear and the constellation Ursa Major for his grandson that she designed and made. He also purchased a card for his wife, which pleased the local designer who made it, Billie Claire Handmade.

Finally, he also grabbed a mug with Vice President Kamala Harris on it. According to Daily Mail reporter Nikki Schwab, he picked up the mug bearing Harris’ face (bought from a Chicago-based company, Honey says) and said, “I’ll get this, too.” Since word got out on social media that Biden selected the mug this afternoon, it’s sold out online.

“So for him to come here, it means a lot for the small business owners because it’s hard for us,” says Honey.

When DCist/WAMU called, Honey couldn’t contain her excitement. She says the pandemic has been especially hard for small businesses, hers included, so the president’s visit was extra special given the timing.

Sometimes people don’t want to shop somewhere with homemade goods, assuming they are too expensive, Honey says, so she hopes the president’s visit changes people’s perspective. She’s optimistic, given how many potential customers have reached out so far via social media.

Honey’s daughter is also a fan of Biden’s. So Biden wrote a note to Honey’s daughter, wishing her a belated birthday (her birthday was last week). Biden also gave Honey a coin with the presidential seal to deliver to her daughter.

Before visiting HoneyMade, Biden stopped by Jeni’s Ice Cream at Barracks Row. Given the president’s well-documented obsession with ice cream, it was a matter of time before Biden visited one of D.C.’s ice cream shops. According to Jessica Sidman of Washingtonian, Biden’s flavor of choice was a scoop of chocolate with peanut butter flecks and a scoop of blackout chocolate cake, served in a waffle cone.

It’s not terribly surprising that Biden chose Jeni’s over, say, locally owned Ice Cream Jubilee about a mile away. The president has a longstanding relationship with the Columbus, Ohio-based chain, having reportedly spent more than $12,000 on pints during his presidential campaign.

This is far from Biden’s first visit to a local business while in office. Some of these have been work-related trips. He grabbed tacos at NoMa’s Las Gemelas in May — and also told the restaurant they’d received a Restaurant Revitalization Fund grant. Earlier in the spring, he stopped by Trinidad’s W.S. Jenks & Son, the city’s oldest hardware store, to speak to its owners about the PPP loan program. Sometimes, of course, the leader of the free world just gets hungry: Last May, Biden, first lady Dr. Jill Biden, Harris, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff dined at D.C. politicians’ favorite spot for French fare, Le Diplomate on 14th Street.

“Something like this is just incredible for local business,” Andrew Dana, co-owner of the popular Call Your Mother bagelry, told DCist/WAMU shortly after Biden’s inauguration. The president made Call Your Mother’s Georgetown location his first local business stop while in office.

Biden’s predecessor, former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, paid a visit to just one D.C. restaurant during his term in office: his own hotel’s steakhouse, BLT Prime.

This post has been corrected to clarify that Biden purchased a child’s hoodie with a bear on it, and to correct the location of the Jeni’s that he visited.
