Former New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez could soon notch a home run off the field in Washington. Once called a “druggie” and a “joke” by former president Donald Trump, A-Rod is reportedly a major investor in the deal to buy the rights to the Trump International Hotel in downtown D.C., according to the Associated Press.

Sources close to the situation told AP that Rodriguez is involved in the $375 million deal, which is set to close within weeks — a twist of fate for the once-popular hotel among GOP elites that’s become somewhat of a “ghost town” since Trump left office.

The $650 million Hospitality Opportunity Fund — which Miami-based investment fund CGI Merchant Group, Rodriguez, and New York real-estate investor Adi Chugh launched in 2020 — is reportedly going under contract to acquire the 263-room property’s lease. They started the fund to purchase hotels struggling through the pandemic and reopen them as “conscious certified” brands that put “more stock in social issues,” per CGI’s website.

That’s quite the shift for a location that once served as a rallying point for MAGA-hat wearing Trump fans and the only D.C. dining spot for Trump himself. The Trump Organization and CGI Merchant Group didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

If it goes through, Rodriguez’ reported real-estate contract could help Trump make a profit off his hotel that lost 63% of its revenue in 2020 — which is especially interesting given Trump’s history of taking shots at the former Yankees infielder online:

“The @Yankees should immediately stop paying A-Rod — he signed his contract without telling them he was a druggie,” @realDonaldTrump tweeted on Opening Day 2013. (Rodriguez was suspended in 2014 season for violating the league’s anti-doping rules.)

Trump tweeted later that season: “Druggie A-Rod has disgraced the blessed @Yankees organization, lied to the fans & embarrassed NYC. He does not deserve to wear the pinstripes.”

Rodriguez also once lived in Trump’s Park Avenue building in New York, and Trump told ESPN the two had a “bad experience.”

In 2012, Trump bought the 100-year-lease on the hotel, located in the Old Post Office building, owned by the federal government. As DCist explained a year ago, the area is an only-works-in-Washington arrangement: “the General Services Administration controls the plaza, the National Park Service runs the sidewalk, and the D.C. government owns the street.”

In the next few weeks, if A-Rod has his way, the former Yankee and quasi-enemy of Trump could join that equation.
