A 15-year-old resident of Northwest D.C., Malachi Jackson, was shot and killed in Columbia Heights last night. He is the third person under 18 killed in a fatal shooting in D.C. this year, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident took place close to the intersections of Columbia Road NW and 13th Street NW, about two blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro. Police responded to a report of a shooting at about 10:50 p.m. Monday night.

According to the police report, Jackson was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was unresponsive when officers arrived. D.C. Fire and EMS pronounced him dead at the scene at 10:55 p.m.

MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that helps lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.

Jackson’s death marks the 46th homicide in D.C. this year, according to MPD data. That’s a slightly lower figure than this time last year, when the city had recorded 52 homicides, but by the end of last year, D.C. had reached its highest homicide count in 16 years. Violent crime on the whole, which includes assault with a dangerous weapon, robbery and sex abuse, is up from 2021 by 28 percent.
