With many companies adopting more flexible remote work options, including Airbnb’s recent announcement that their employees can literally work from anywhere— forever—the world of where we work, how we work, where we live and how we live has never been more flexible. Yet the way we furnish and decorate our homes is just as difficult, expensive, and time-consuming as ever. Fernish, which expanded to the D.C. Metro area this Spring, is built to provide people with a fundamentally different, more convenient, and more attainable way to create our homes.

“We want to make it effortless to create your home,” says Fernish CEO Michael Barlow. “That’s why we’re here. We offer a convenient solution that gives you the freedom to decorate however you wish— without the heavy expense and permanence of long-term investments and the ability to easily pick up and go as your life evolves.”

Fernish lets you rent, buy or rent-to-own furniture on your terms. The service includes free delivery and assembly in as soon as 7 days. It also includes free 3-day swaps if an item doesn’t work.

The expansive assortment– sourced from leading designers and retailers including Crate and Barrel, CB2, EQ3, Floyd and others– includes everything from large living and bedroom furniture, to standing desks, TVs, mattresses, vases, pillows, and wall art.

“We’ve all struggled with assembly, and in addition to eliminating that hassle, we want to get rid of the tremendous waste caused by fast furniture,” adds Barlow.

Employing a business model that’s purpose-built for the circular economy, Fernish saved 268 tons of furniture from landfills in 2021 alone. All products are made from durable, quality materials and go through a rigorous sanitation process using sustainably sourced materials where possible. Refurbished items go back into circulation and into another welcoming home— not a curbside or a landfill.

Fernish takes away the expense and hassle of moving. “With Fernish you can spend your time and money on other experiences—and if in your travels you fall in love with another city—go and we’ll pick up your items and put them to good use in a new home,” adds Barlow.

Fernish currently services the DC Metro and Northern Virginia areas in addition to NYC, LA, Orange County, San Diego, Seattle, Dallas, and Austin, with more areas planned this Fall.
