What do silent discos, fashion shows, restaurant discounts, wing-eating contests, and art galleries have in common? They’re all offered as part of D.C.’s Art All Night event, which hits all eight wards this Friday and Saturday.
Nearly two dozen neighborhoods will participate in the annual event, along with four public libraries. Shaw’s Main Street program launched Art All Night in 2011, and it’s grown each year to draw over 100,000 residents; with the exception of 2020, due to the pandemic. It was modeled after Paris’ annual Nuit Blanche (sleepless night), in which museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions open their doors all night for free. The D.C. event kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday and ends at 3 a.m. on Sunday, featuring more than 100 artists showcasing original artwork, activities for families, and live performances.
In a statement Mayor Muriel Bowser called the weekend a chance to celebrate D.C., the “capital of creativity.”
“Artists and makers across D.C help us celebrate the history and culture of our community, and this weekend, we celebrate and honor them,” said Bowser, whose Department of Small & Local Business Development sponsors the event in collaboration with the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the DCPL, and the Main Streets and Business Improvement Districts. The events typically generate about $2 million in revenue for businesses and artists across the city.
“When we support our creatives and their businesses, we support the type of growth and innovation that help our corridors, neighborhoods, communities, and residents thrive,” Bowser added.
