Maryland is in its (227) era.
Or, it will be.
The state’s Public Service Commission announced on Wednesday that amid a dwindling supply of (240) and (301) phone numbers, (227) will become the new area code for some geographic areas, including Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The decision comes after the commission voted in August to approve a request from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, the entity that allocates telephone numbering resources.
The remaining supply of (240) and (301) numbers are expected to be used up by the second quarter of 2023, according to the commission. Existing phone numbers won’t change, but all future phone number assignments will use (227) — once all (240) and (301) numbers are claimed. The new area code also won’t change anything about how callers dial a number.
The news comes after neighboring D.C. began assigning new area codes in November last year for the first time, turning the District from the (202) to the (202)/(771).
The (240)/(301)/soon-to-be (227) area include Allegany, Charles, Garrett, Montgomery, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s and Washington counties.
