The Kennedy Center is dropping its mask requirement starting today.
“If you prefer to wear a mask, you are welcome to do so,” the performing arts center wrote on its website. “We ask that you respect others’ choices, and alert a staff member if you have any concerns.”
The Kennedy Center stopped requiring audience members to show proof of COVID vaccination in May. It says it consults with the Cleveland Clinic and Inova to “evaluate and adjust health and safety policies and will continue to do so as local and national conditions evolve.”
Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted the city’s vaccine requirement for businesses and dropped the city’s mask mandate in most indoor settings in February.
The CDC says nearly all counties in the D.C. region have a “low” spread, which requires the fewest precautions.
While the region’s theaters originally presented a united front on masking and vaccination policies, those policies are now a mixed bag across the region. Places like the National Theatre and Strathmore are mask optional. The Shakespeare Theatre Company is hosting some performances with masks required and others with masks recommended. Arena Stage requires masks. Most music venues have dropped all COVID requirements.
