It’s that time again: on Nov. 20, the 2022 FIFA World Cup begins (this is the men’s soccer World Cup; the women’s World Cup is scheduled for next summer), and venues across the D.C. region are opening their doors at all hours for fans to tune into the games. The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) — it’s kind of like the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), but for dudes — have three scheduled games so far.
- Match 1: USMNT v Wales (Nov. 21, 2 p.m. ET)
- Match 2: USMNT v England (Nov. 25, 2 p.m. ET)
- Match 3: USMNT v Iran (Nov. 29, 2 p.m. ET)
While the annual tournament isn’t without controversy — some people are advocating for people to boycott the games due to treatment of laborers and LGBTQ+ community in host country Qatar — it will still likely be a big draw. Especially after the D.C. Council passed legislation to allow bars, restaurants, and breweries to remain open 24-7 during the tournament, there is no shortage of locations to watch the World Cup live around the region.
Note, not all bars can automatically stay open 24 hours — in order to do so, they must have registered with and been approved by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration. As of Nov. 11, more than 60 bars in D.C. had received the go-ahead.
