The James Beard Foundation released its chef and restaurant finalists for 2023, and some of the most recognized names in the D.C. area’s dining scene are among them.
The long list of semifinalists, which included 18 nominees in the D.C. region, shrank to just three finalists across three different categories with Wednesday’s announcement.
Rob Rubba of Shaw restaurant Oyster Oyster made the finalist cut for the Outstanding Chef category. Rubba has impressed critics in the past year with his vegetable-based cooking; Food & Wine named him one of its best new chefs last year for the “energy and excitement” he put into the menu at Oyster Oyster, and the restaurant was also awarded a Michelin star. Oyster Oyster was a James Beard finalist in the Best New Restaurant category last year, but it, along with other D.C. area chefs and restaurants, were ultimately shut out when it came time to hand out awards.
Michael Rafidi of Albi is also a finalist for the category of Best Chef in the Mid Atlantic. Nine chefs from the D.C. area were nominated, but the chef and owner of the Michelin-starred Albi was the only one to make it to the final round. (Pennsylvania swept the category.) Rafidi, who’s previously cooked at Spanish restaurant Arroz and modern French restaurant Requin, prepares Arabic food inspired by his Palestinian family roots at Albi. The Maryland native has already received plenty of local praise for his prolific career.
The Peruvian fine dining restaurant Causa, led by Chef Carlos Delgado, made it to the final round of Best New Restaurant, going up against nine restaurants from different parts of the country. Causa has received positive reviews for its relatively affordable tasting menu that sets sail on an experimental seafood voyage. However, the Basque restaurant of Michelin-rated chef Johnny Spero, Bar Spero, did not make it to the final round.
Few women were semifinalists — including Ris Lacoste of Ris for Outstanding Restaurant, Joy Crump of FOODE for Best Chef in the Mid Atlantic, and Swati Bose of Flight Wine Bar (along with her partner Kabir Amir) for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program — but none made it to the final round. The James Beard Foundation has said it underwent an overhaul to bring more diversity into their nominees.
James Beard Award winners will be announced during an awards ceremony June 5 in Chicago. The finalists were announced on the foundation’s Instagram account. Here’s the complete full list of finalists.
