A grand jury in Prince George’s County has indicted former College Park mayor Patrick Wojahn on 80 counts of possessing and distributing child pornography.
The indictment returned on Tuesday exceeded even what Wojahn, 47, faced when he was arrested on March 2. At that time, police charged him with 56 charges related to allegations that he uploaded child pornography — including videos of prepubescent boys engaged in sexual acts with adult men — to a social media account he controlled.
“This is an unprecedented case in our county in which a former elected official has been accused of a crime of this nature,” State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said in a statement. “We elect leaders with the expectation that they will serve, protect, and advocate for our children, families, and communities and not harm them in any way.”
The case against Wojahn stemmed from a notification in mid-February from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to Prince George’s County Police about the account, the department said in early March. The department later searched the mayor’s home in College Park and recovered cell phones, a tablet, a computer, and a storage device, according to the police department. Wojahn admitted to owning the social media account where the child pornography was shared.
Wojahn, who had served in elected office in College Park since 2007, resigned the day before he was arrested, saying that he did not want the investigation to serve as distraction to the city’s business and that he was “stepping away to deal with my own mental health.”
An attorney for Wojahn told The Washington Post that he continues to cooperate with law enforcement. If convicted, Wojahn could face decades of prison time and be required to register as a sex offender.
