/ Wammie Music Awards

D.C.-area musicians celebrated their version of the Grammys, called the Wammies, at Capital Turnaround Saturday night. The Wammie Music Awards, in its 35th year, is a way to honor the region’s music scene, and can be a stepping stone to greater recognition for local artists.

The award categories are not exactly the same every year — they respond to evolving music trends in the local music scene. The organizers also do not give out awards in categories that do not have a minimum of three nominees for that given year. Nominations come from the public — the nomination period for this year began in December and ran through Jan. 15.

There are dozens of awards, which fall into three broader categories: music genre awards, general interest awards, and community interest awards. MusicianShip, the music education nonprofit which presents the Wammies every year, selects the community interest award winners (MusicianShip took over the awards program in 2019 after the Washington Area Music Association — which started the ceremony in 1985 — disbanded in 2018).

The other categories are chosen by a large cadre of judges, half of whom are music writers, reporters, and critics. The remaining half are “non-performing music industry professionals,” which includes producers, radio hosts, DJs, club owners, educators, and others who are not currently promoting music for sale or streaming.

Industry judges must have at least five years of experience in the music industry, be “relevant to DMV music scene,” are community stakeholders, and have no conflicts of interest. There are up to 100 music industry professionals every year who judge the awards.
