Four people were shot, one fatally, in a mass shooting at a funeral on the 4000 block of Benning Road NE in D.C. just after noon Tuesday.
“It appears that several of the people who were on the block were specifically targeted; we’re unsure why these people were targeted, more or less why they were targeted at a funeral,” Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said at a press conference.
The shooting occurred after guests exited the ceremony. Police are still looking for a suspect or suspects and haven’t identified a reason why the victims may have been targeted.
The first officer to respond to the shots fired was an MPD officer stationed nearby the ceremony at the request of family members for the safety of attendees. The funeral was for a homicide victim, Contee said at the press conference.
“It speaks to the brazenness of some of the people that we see commit violent acts in our communities,” Contee said regarding the shooting occurring even with a police presence. “When we have people that demonstrate this level of violence in our communities, I quite frankly, I don’t think we make excuses for people who do these types of crimes; they need to be ultimately held accountable for their actions.”
There was another shooting a short time later Tuesday, about a mile away on the 4300 block of F Street SE, which Contee said preliminarily does not appear to be connected.
A mass shooting is defined as an incident where at least four victims are shot, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks all known gun violence incidents in the U.S. This is the third mass shooting in D.C. this year and the second this month, according to the GVA count.
Homicides are up 30% in D.C. this year compared to the same period last year, and the city is heading into warmer spring and summer months, which are often the most violent time of the year. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Friday said she would boost hiring bonuses for police department recruits to $25,000, a 25% increase, as part of an effort to hire and retain officers.
