Just as the Yellow Line reopens in May after eight months of repairs, three other Metro lines are set to be disrupted by construction. Later this spring and summer, construction will lead to some single tracking and station closures on the Orange, Silver, and Green lines.
The busiest sections of the lines downtown will remain largely unaffected, according to the transit authority: Metro says trains between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory and between L’Enfant Plaza and Mt Vernon Square will still arrive every four to six minutes, all day. But the closures could cause significant disruptions for residents further from the center of town.
Below are the anticipated closures and alternatives from Metro.
The first phase – which goes from May 12 to May 21 — will lead to single tracking on the Orange Line. Customers can expect the following delays and disruptions during the weekday rush hour (6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) as trains will single track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly:
- Orange Line trains will arrive every 12 minutes between Vienna and Stadium-Armory.
- Orange Line trains will arrive every 24 minutes between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton.
- Orange Line trains will arrive every 24 minutes between Stadium-Armory and Downtown Largo.
During all other times, Orange Line trains will run every 20 minutes between Vienna and New Carrollton.
Downtown stations served by multiple lines will continue to have relatively frequent trains, according to Metro. Here’s what you can expect in those closer-in stations:
- Trains will come every four minutes between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory during rush hours (6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.) and every five to six minutes at all other times.
- Trains will come every four minutes between L’Enfant Plaza and Mt Vernon Square during rush hours and every five to six minutes all other times.
- Between Stadium-Armory and Largo, trains will come every five to six minutes during rush hours, and every seven to eight minutes all other times.
The second phase, from June 3 to June 25, will close multiple stations on the Orange Line: Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, and East Falls Church.
While the stations are closed, Metro will offer the following shuttles for affected riders:
- A local Orange Line shuttle every five minutes during rush hours, and every 10 minutes during non-rush hours between Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, and Ballston-MU stations.
- Another local shuttle that runs every five minutes during rush hours (and every 10 during non-rush hours) between the McLean, East Falls Church, and Ballston-MU stations.
- An “Orange Line Express” shuttle that takes riders between the Vienna and Rosslyn stations, every five minutes during rush hours and every 10 minutes during non-rush hours.
- A “Silver Line Limited” station that offers limited-stop service between Washington Dulles International Airport, McLean, and Rosslyn every five minutes during rush hours, and every 10 minutes during non-rush hours.
And here are the delays and disruptions Orange Line riders can expect during this phase:
- During the weekday rush hour, Orange and Silver line trains will run every 12 minutes between Ballston-MU and New Carrollton/Downtown Largo. At all other times, they’ll run every 15 minutes between those stations.
- During the weekday rush hour, trains will run every six minutes everywhere the Orange and Silver Lines overlap between Ballston and Stadium-Armory.
- Silver Line trains will run every eight minutes between Ashburn and McLean except after 9:30 p.m., when they’ll run every 10 minutes.
- Downtown areas served by multiple lines will remain mostly unaffected: Trains will arrive every four to five minutes between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory, every four minutes between L’Enfant Plaza and Mt. Vernon Square, and every six to seven and a half minutes.
During the next phase, between June 26 and July 16, East Falls Church and West Falls Church will reopen, but Vienna and Dunn Loring will remain closed. Metro will run shuttles between Vienna, Dunn Loring, and West Falls church every five to 10 minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends. Riders can also expect the following:
- Orange Line trains running every 12 minutes between West Falls Church and New Carrollton, except after 9:30 p.m., when they’ll run every 15 minutes.
- Downtown D.C. stations will remain largely unaffected.
On July 22 and July 23, construction will move to the Green Line. Fort Totten’s Red Line service will remain, but its Green Line service will pause those days. And the West Hyattsville, Hyattsville Crossing, College Park-U of Md, and Greenbelt will be closed those days, too. Metro will offer a shuttle every 10 minutes between Greenbelt, College Park, Hyattsville Crossing, West Hyattsville, and Fort Totten.
It will also offer a limited-stop shuttle every eight minutes between Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Fort Totten, and Georgia Ave-Petworth, and another limited-stop shuttle every eight minutes between Hyattsville Crossing, West Hyattsville, Fort Totten, and Georgia Ave-Petworth.
And during the final phase, between July 24 and September 4, Metro will close the Green Line’s West Hyattsville, Hyattsville Crossing, College Park-U of Md, and Greenbelt stations. Metro will offer a local shuttle every eight to 10 minutes between Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Hyattsville Crossing, and West Hyattsville.
There will also be a limited-stop shuttle every five to 10 minutes between Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, and Fort Totten, and another limited-stop shuttle every five to 10 minutes between Hyattsville Crossing, West Hyattsville, and Fort Totten.
Riders can expect Green Line trains every eight minutes between Fort Totten and Branch Ave at all times.
