Service cuts and fare hikes for the next fiscal year are not off the table, but Metro officials are expecting they’ll be less severe.

The commitment will not be finalized until D.C. wraps up its budget in the spring.

Metro trains will run an additional two hours on New Year’s Eve, and riders can also take advantage of new 24-hour bus service.

Metro says it would have to cut back service by two-thirds as early as July if it doesn’t acquire additional state funding.

Any drivers blocking a bus stop will be fined $100 starting this month. Enforcement for bus-only lanes starts next year.

Metro is planning on changing bus route names for the first time in 50 years. The new naming system would be part of a larger initiative by Metro to redesign its network.

Officials say the new signage will help riders more easily navigate the region. Metro also announced several Red Line stations will close for repairs over the winter holidays.

The transit agency also says station managers will be nearby to tap students who forget their Kids Ride Free Metro card through the faregate.

The transit agency began adding the 55-inch gates to several stations this summer. It is now planning to install them across the whole system.

Metro has installed 55-inch tall polycarbonate doors at Fort Totten faregates, and will be installing them at nine other stations by early fall.
