Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14 — less than two weeks away! But there’s still plenty of time to sort out a plan that will make you, your mama, or any woman you want to celebrate feel special. Breakfast in bed sounds great in theory, but if you’re a little too old for frozen waffles and a glass of O.J. to count as putting in effort, you can make a reservation at one of these local restaurants instead. (But hurry! Several of the spots offering specials are already booked up.) If you aren’t in love with dining out, you can pick up a meal to go, grab a gift box, or take Mom to a concert, film screening, or play.
CUT D.C.
Wolfgang Puck’s steakhouse CUT D.C. just started doing brunch this year, but the team is already prepared to take on their harshest critic: Mom. Chef Andrew Skala’s Mother’s Day prix fixe menu ($124 or $70 for kids) provides a number of options starting with dishes such as Maryland blue crab cakes in a basil pesto aioli, lemon herb smoked salmon blinis, or surryano ham with burrata, asparagus, and fava beans. For your entree, you can devour a maple-glazed pork belly benedict with persimmon jam and aleppo pepper hollandaise, or go the sweet route with panettone french toast topped with clotted cream and rhubarb compote. Steak frites are, of course, also on the menu. In addition to leaving with a full belly, Mom will go home with mini orchids. Reservations are on OpenTable. (1050 31st ST NW, Washington, D.C. 20007; May 14 from 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.)
DOLCE VITA
The menu at Dolce Vita puts a spotlight on Italian, Moroccan, Spanish, and Greek cuisines, a tribute to owner Med Lahlou’s cultural background. The fusion restaurant is offering a four-course dinner ($65) for Mother’s Day that begins with hummus, beet salad, grilled baby eggplant drizzled with honey and tahini, or a dish of brussels sprouts in labneh with lemon, honey, pistachios, and pomegranate seeds. Except for a grilled, aged ribeye, the entree options focus on the fruits of the ocean with a Mediterranean dorada filet, seafood rice, and lobster ravioli. Round out the meal with caramel flan or churros and hot chocolate. Reservations can be made on OpenTable. (1610 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009; May 14 from 5-10 p.m.)
ELCIELO
Say “I love you” in a big way with a parade of tiny, and very tasty bites. If you want to celebrate Mom with a meal she’ll never forget, and have the cash to burn, you can book the Mother’s Day Experience ($295) at Elcielo. The Michelin-starred Colombian restaurant is offering two seating options for the culinary event, which will feature a whopping 20 courses. Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos is all about presentation, so expect food that is also basically art. You’re welcome, Mom. For reservations, visitTock. (1280 4th St. NE, Washington, 20002, USA; May 14 at 4 or 8 p.m.)
ENTYSE
Give your mom another reason to brag about you by treating her to Mother’s Day brunch at The Ritz-Carlton. The buffet at ENTYSE ($149 or $60 for kids) will include a seafood display featuring jumbo shrimp, crab claws, oysters, mussels, and lobster tails. There will also be three varieties of caviar, assorted sushi and sashimi, smoked trout, crab chowder, a few different preparations of salmon, and an oven-roasted banana leaf grouper in coconut sauce. Those, dear readers, are just the seafood options. The restaurant will also present diners with dim sum, butter chicken, herb-crusted ribeye in pinot noir jus, orange maple-glazed ham with bourbon sauce, and more. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (703) 744-3999. (1700 Tysons Blvd, McLean, VA 22102; May 14 from 10;30 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

FOXTROT
Your inbox is probably full of marketing emails urging you to buy mom one gift or another. Flowers are great, but if you want to mix things up without much effort, you can pick up a gift box from Foxtrot. The shop is offering two curated boxes for mom — gift wrapped and ready to go. “Do Not Disturb Mode” ($39.99) includes a bath bomb, nighttime face mask, and a fig-scented candle. “A Sweet Moment For Mom” ($29.99) comes with treats for both skin and taste buds. The box includes a vegan collagen eye mask, a revitalizing red wine sheet mask, gummies, and chocolate. Shipping is also available. (All D.C. area Foxtrot locations)
EXCLUSION
If a 90-minute-long matinee or evening production sounds like something you mama would enjoy on Mother’s Day, you can take her to the theater, darling. Arena Stage presents the world premiere of Exclusion ($56-95), Kenneth Lin’s one-act comedy. In the play, a historian’s best-selling book about the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 catches the attention of a Hollywood mogul. But as work begins on the mini-series, a battle brews over what’s true and what sells. (1101 6th St SW, Washington, DC 20024; May 14 at 2 or 7:30 p.m.)
FRYER’S ROADSIDE
If tea sandwiches and floral dresses aren’t your mama’s style, you can serve up a hearty Mother’s Day meal at home. Fried chicken and ice cream stand Fryer’s is putting together ready-to-serve meals with everything you need to fill mom’s heart with love and cholesterol. The Fried Whiting Fish Fry box ($80) comes with sides of collard greens, potato wedges, coleslaw, Hawaiian rolls, and strawberry shortcake. The Fried Chicken Field Day box ($60) includes classic or spicy fried chicken, coleslaw, honey sriracha brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and chocolate chip cookies. If red meat is the way to Mom’s heart, try the Money Muscle BBQ Box ($90) with Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, a full rack of BBQ ribs, plus mac and cheese, collard greens, biscuits, and banana pudding. Availability is limited, so order soon! (12830 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904; Pick-up May 14 at 11 a.m.)

GRAVITAS
Enjoy a three-course brunch in Ivy City at Gravitas, the restaurant that earned Chef Matt Baker a Michelin star. The Mother’s Day brunch menu ($88) is shorter than some other prix fixe specials, but the dishes sound downright droolworthy. Drizzle maple syrup over brioche French toast made sweeter with chantilly cream and berry compote, or begin your meal with an asparagus and mushroom salad, or salmon tartare served with soft-boiled egg, green beans, pea puree, and black olive caramel. The second course presents more tough choices with lamb loin in green harissa, wagyu steak and eggs, crab cake eggs benedict, or a black truffle frittata with caramelized onion and lamb bacon. Complete the experience with an intriguing brown sugar cake that features bacon-brown butter streusel, orange caramel, and pecan-caramel ice cream, or the chocolate semifreddo, a sort of fudgy brownie topped with frozen chocolate tuile and candied cocoa nibs. Kid’s meals are available as an add-on option. Lock in your reservation on Resy. (1401 Okie St. NE, Washington, 20002; May 14 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
