RHIZOME IS HOME: Since opening in 2016, Takoma Park’s Rhizome DC has become a home for D.C.’s DIY arts community. Rhizome is Home, a documentary directed by Tatev Sargsyan, attempts to capture Rhizome’s spirit through archival footage and oral histories. GO-GO ON THE ROOFTOP: Martin Luther King Jr. Library’s Black Music Month series is coming to an end, and they’re going out with a drum bang. YOU AND ME AND YOU: For your summer soundtrack consideration, check out Just to Keep Them Happy, the new record from self-described “harmony-laden, sweater-wearing, indie rock quartet” You and Me and You. BLACK FOOD AND WINE: Wine and dine with your neighbors at the DC Black Food & Wine Festival, which takes over Gateway DC in Congress Heights this Saturday. The event brings Black business owners in the food and beverage industries together for a day of music and indulgence. SILVER SCREEN CENTENNIAL: This year, Warner Bros. Studios turns 100. To celebrate, AFI Silver Spring is running a Warner Bros. Centennial series, which brings studio classics to the silver screen. Don’t miss the chance to catch Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in film noir classic The Big Sleep, which plays four times this weekend. (AFI Silver Spring; through July 13; $10+)
LOOK HERE: You won’t be able to look away from Look Here, the Suchi Reddy installation taking over the National Building Museum’s Great Hall for this year’s version of the museum’s annual Summer Block Party. Composed of reflective fractals and mirrored fortune-tellers that warp the viewer’s perspective, Look Here also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington with archival images. FIRST SATURDAY: If it’s the first Saturday of the month, the National Gallery is the place to be. This First Saturday, visitors will find bilingual storytelling, drop-in artmaking, face painting, and a screening of Nationtime, narrated by Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. DC Public Library will also be hosting a pop-up library that celebrates Leonardo da Vinci. (National Gallery of Art; 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; FREE)
VILLAINS OF SILICON VALLEY: This is not your typical walking tour. This Saturday, best-selling author Malcolm Harris will guide attendees on a tour of sites that represent how Silicon Valley leaders have promoted capitalism through D.C. institutions. The Villains of Silicon Valley tour, which is sponsored by Democratic Socialists of America, will draw from Harris’ new book, Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World. And Harris definitely won’t be passing out free joints at the end. (Freedom Plaza; 1 p.m.; FREE)
DIANA ROSS: Are you coming out to the Filene Center at Wolf Trap this Saturday? If you are, you’ll have the chance to see the legendary Diana Ross, who brings all her hits — from “I’m Coming Out” to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Stop in the Name of Love” — to Vienna for one night only. SMITHSONIAN FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL: Summer is in full swing, which means the Smithsonian Folklife Festival is back on the National Mall. Though festival organizers canceled Thursday’s opening ceremony due to poor air quality, as of press time, the festival still planned to hold events and performances safely as weather allows. This weekend, find workshops and performances that cover bluegrass music, Cherokee crafts, guitarmaking, Hindu rituals, Oaxacan barbacoa and so much more. Did we mention it’s all free? THAI FESTIVAL: Double the festivals, double the fun. This Sunday, Sawasdee DC joins the Folklife Festival on the National Mall. Presented by the Royal Thai Embassy, this Thai Festival brings Thai food, dance, music, martial arts, massage and more to the nation’s capital. (National Mall; 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; FREE)
