More than 2,000 people have died following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred Friday near the city of Marrakesh in Morocco. It’s thought to be one of the deadliest to strike the country in over six decades, leaving thousands more without shelter in the days since.
As crews work around the clock to rescue survivors and support those affected, organizations here in the D.C. region have put together fundraisers to provide direct relief:
- Dar al Hijrah Islamic Center: This mosque has been serving northern Virginia since 1983, and has long been an anchor for the Moroccan community in the D.C. region. In the wake of the devastating earthquake, they’re accepting cash donations to provide clean water, food, tents, and blankets to people in need. You can make a donation here.
- World Central Kitchen: Founded by renowned D.C. chef Jose Andres, this nonprofit is already on the ground in Morocco to provide fresh meals and water to those affected. The group is also working directly with local organizations and restaurants in Morocco to offer relief. You can make a donation here.
- The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington: Following the earthquake, this organization has opened the Morocco Earthquake Relief Fund to provide relief to victims. The fund will be used to support ground workers and to share food, medicine, temporary shelter, and more. You can make a donation here.
