On Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m., protestors and activists are expected to gather at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, an end to U.S. funding for Israel, and to demand that Israel be held accountable for what organizers say are “war crimes” and “violations of international law.”

This weekend’s March On Washington For Gaza marks almost three months since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas led attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people. Two hundred others were taken hostage, of which more than 100 are still being held captive. In response, Israeli bombardments and a siege against Hamas in Gaza have killed more than 20,000 people – 70 percent of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

The event (which was initially going to be held on the National Mall but was relocated) is being led by the American Muslim Task Force for Palestine and several other organizations. According to the march website, there are buses coming into D.C. from more than 20 states, including Georgia, Connecticut, Indiana, and Texas.

As part of its programming, there will be a press conference at 12 p.m. where Palestinian Americans from around the U.S. (including the D.C. region) will share stories of their family members who have been killed in Gaza. At 1 p.m., there will be more programming and speakers – then at 2:30 p.m. the march is expected to begin. According to the march website, it will be available to stream on Youtube.

The march will start at Freedom Plaza before turning right onto 14th Street NW, then left onto K Street NW, left onto 17th Street NW, then left again onto Pennsylvania Ave NW before ending at the White House. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, there are no planned road closures at this time.

Since Oct. 7, there have been multiple events and demonstrations around D.C. surrounding the Israeli-Hamas war, including vigils, food pop-ups, and more. In November, protesters held a similar march to call for a ceasefire in Gaza that drew thousands, along with a separate rally that was organized on the National Mall in support of Israel.
