Helicopters flew so low over a crowd of protesters in downtown D.C. that the wind brushed debris, dirt, and glass into their faces.

Demonstrators who took to the streets after George Floyd’s killing sued D.C. police, alleging violations of their constitutional rights.

The longtime family-owned restaurant could join over a dozen downtown businesses that have shuttered during the pandemic.

Earlier this week, the city imposed a 14-day self-quarantine requirement for people traveling to Washington from states deemed as “high-risk” by health department officials.

“Officers are not required to wear PPE while out on patrol and many are choosing to forego masks,” wrote the ACLU of D.C. in a letter to city leaders this week.

The order mandates that inmates receive medical care within 24 hours of reporting symptoms and get access to legal calls, among other requirements.

They say they were given no warning before federal law enforcement used tear gas, pepper spray capsules, rubber bullets, and flash bombs to clear the public space.

This is the D.C. ACLU’s fourth lawsuit in recent years that alleges a D.C. police officer conducted a sexually invasive or unreasonable search.

“This case is about making sure that dissent is respected and protected in the future,” says one of the plaintiffs.
