More than 11% of mail ballots were returned as undeliverable ahead of the 2020 general election, likely because of outdated information in D.C.’s voter registry.

Like the system recently used in New York City’s mayoral election, a D.C. bill would let voters rank up to five candidates in any given race.

A new law, which applies only to the November election, sets up what’s known as a ballot “cure” process and requires that election officials reach out to voters whose ballots have been flagged because of errors.

Earlier this month, Hogan announced the November primary would have expanded in-person voting and mail-in ballot applications for every voter, but local election officials and Democratic state lawmakers say they’re worried about “voter confusion” and spreading the coronavirus.

The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics will gather tomorrow to count over 5,000 absentee and provisional ballots that may swing the result of the tightly contested At-Large race between Councilmember Vincent Orange and Sekou Biddle.
