Butter Me Up has officially opened as a standalone restaurant in D.C., just a mile away from where it began popping up during the peak of the pandemic.
“We’re going to start off with what we know how to do. Then it’s only gonna get better,” says La Tejana co-owner Gus May.
Juiceries and shops around D.C. are taking considerable creative license with the original smoothie-like recipe.
The idea has been brewing for more than 10 years, and the recipes have been passed down for generations.
Stop by the Petworth spot on Thursday through Sunday mornings for locally-roasted coffee, wood-fired bagels and breakfast empanadas.
The new sandwich shop brings two things D.C. could use more of: pastrami and quick breakfast sandwiches.

Taylor Gourmet will launch a new breakfast menu at their 14th Street location beginning February 4.
When the D.C. Council sat down to its usual monthly breakfast this morning, its members were faced with a generous spread of scrambled eggs, grits, applesauce, fruit salad and massive danishes. But the lack of bacon or any other breakfast meat did not go unnoticed.
