Local LGBTQ+ Nonprofit Casa Ruby Was Financially Mismanaged For Years Before Its Closure
As things fell apart in D.C., founder Ruby Corado sent at least $500,000 abroad to grow the new Casa Ruby, El Salvador chapter.
The founder and executive director of Casa Ruby appears to have fled the country after withdrawing tens of thousands of dollars of the nonprofit’s funds, according to a statement from the D.C. Attorney General.
Casa Ruby founder Ruby Corado is reportedly the only person who controls the nonprofit’s bank accounts, but former staff and local officials have not been able to reach her.
The group is raising money with a GoFundMe campaign to continue some of its emergency shelter services for LGBTQ+ people experiencing homelessness.
“I cannot be blessed with the privilege that I have today in D.C. and look the other way,” says Casa Ruby founder, Ruby Corado, who grew up in El Salvador.
