Coachella Brings in Some of D.C.’s Best Bands
The do-it-yourself ethos of D.C.’s music scene doesn’t always lend itself to big weekends like Coachella, but this year’s edition of the Southern California music festival proved otherwise.

Out and About: Weekend Picks
FRIDAY: >> Even though Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is an obvious choice for the movie-going crowd this weekend, the Avalon Theatre — just north of the Potter madness at the Uptown — is showing Talk to Me, the new biopic on the life of famed Washington, D.C., talk-show host and activist Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. 5:50 and 8:30 p.m. >> Unbuckled alumni The Vita Ruins celebrate the release of their…

Konono No. 1@ the Black Cat
Review and photos by DCist contributor Paul Ghosh-Roy They don’t speak English. Their sound system consists of PA style loud speakers draped with mics. They play thumb pianos. The guy who formed the band was born in 1933. They also have a track produced by Timbaland on Bjork’s new album. Oh yeah, and they played the Black Cat on Friday night. What to make of all this, you ask? Well, it’s Konono No. 1, son,…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
There’s so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it’s almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don’t have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist’s London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with…

Peter Bjorn and John at the 9:30 Club
We had been looking forward to seeing Swedish indie darlings Peter Bjorn and John for some time, but as sometimes happen with indie darlings, Monday’s sold out 9:30 Club show underwhelmed. The trio, who have been all over Pitchfork and the blogs, play understated, finely crafted 60s-ish pop. They’ve been together since 1999, but their third album, 2006’s “Writer’s Block,” catapulted them to indie stardom, mainly due to the single “Young Folks.” The rest of…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scene. Don’t even front like they don’t. They also have Dorito bananas and white guys shopping for wives. What they don’t have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers. Bostonist sees Boston and Somerville each whip out their art and face off. A plagiarized novel is the…

Music Tidbits
SXDC As much as we’d like to be, DCist isn’t at SXSW right now. A couple of our ist-a-verse brethren made the trek to the oh-so-awesome music, film and interactive festival out in sunny Austin. What’s even more exciting than that is that so did two D.C. musicians! We’re beaming like proud parents as our very own Three Stars alum The Hint head to Texas. It’s kind of like sending our kids off to college….
