In D.C., Some Parents And Teachers Struggle With Aging Schools That Are Years Away From Being Modernized
D.C. has a schedule for when schools get modernized, but that can leave aging buildings at the mercy of maintenance issues — and critics say the city isn’t keeping up.
Officials say the number of students enrolled at D.C. public and charter schools has hit a 15-year high since counting began in 2007.
Students will also have until October or November to show proof of routine childhood vaccinations before they’re barred from attending class.
The administrators, who worked at Lawrence E. Boone Elementary in Fairlawn, challenged teacher training practices they felt discriminated against Black children.
The District would spend at least $12,419 for every child in the 2022-23 academic year, which is about $690 more than it currently spends.
Substitute teachers have been pushing for a pay raise for several years but the issue has grown more urgent during the pandemic.
The bill also requires D.C. Public Schools to implement a menstrual health curriculum for all students starting in the fourth grade.
